Recap: Red Bulls Dominated by Columbus; Lose 3-0

New York Red Bulls suffered their first loss of the 2024 season on Saturday night, a 3-0 drubbing at the feet of the Columbus Crew SC with goals from Cucho Hernandez, Jacen Russell-Rowe and Aidan Morris. To make matters worse, the team will be short-handed against Miami next week following a red card to midfielder Daniel Edelman.

The first half quickly revealed the differences between New York and the reigning MLS Cup Champion Columbus Crew. While Red Bulls tried their best to play through the midfield, they were unable to affectively kickstart the offense. Conversely it was Columbus who was able to split the defense with incisive long passes. One such pass found Yaw Yeboah on the left wing, who passed to Hernandez for the game’s opening goal.

New York managed to survive the barrage from the Crew with only surrendering one goal in the first half. However, the dam broke in the second half in the 56th minute. Hernandez found the foot of Russell-Rowe who ran through the defense and scored on Red Bulls keeper Carlos Coronel. The final blow came in the 66th minute off of a corner kick where Morris finished a chance in front of an empty net.

To make matters worse for the Red Bulls, frustration took hold towards the end of the game. Midfielder Edelman took a second yellow card, sending him off and will keep him from playing in his next available game.

The game served as a wake-up call for the Red Bulls who were undefeated through the first three games of the season. Now they look to recoup their confidence ahead of a pivotal game at Red Bull Arena against Inter Miami next Saturday.
