Columbus Crew SC have announced an extension of MLS Cup-winning coach Wilfried Nancy’s contract on Wednesday afternoon. The news comes as the team looks to defend their title, having started the season with a 3-1-4 record in the league and an appearance in the semi-final of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
“We are excited to extend Wilfried’s contract because of the culture he has helped create within the club,” said President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “When we hired Wilfried, our top priority was ensuring alignment from the first team through Crew 2 and the academy with coaches, players and staff including in our desired style of play, player profiles and, most importantly, our club values.”
Nancy’s time in MLS started by replacing legendary player Thierry Henry as the head coach of CF Montreal. While there he led them to a record of 37-17-25 and an appearance in the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs where they lost to NYCFC in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. He also lifted the Canadian Cup in his first try, defeating Toronto 1-0 and making it to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions League, losing to eventual winners Cruz Azul.
Joining Columbus in 2023, Nancy’s impact was immediate, taking the team to their third MLS Cup Championship. Now, he looks to continue their success internationally as they are one step from the Champions Cup final.
“We have a clear vision as a club,” said Bezbatchenko. “We can continue to write our story and evoke emotions. With humility, I’m very proud of what we have accomplished together during the past year, but most importantly, I am pleased with how we are focused on growing together and working to improve as a team and individuals.”
