New York City FC are still slogging through the 2024 season in search of consistency but the team couldn’t find it in Miami after a frustrating 1-1 draw. Despite having numerous chances to score against a shaky Inter defense, City’s head coach Nick Cushing is lamenting his team’s inability to finish off the game.

“Ultimately, you’ve got to have the ability to execute a result,” said Cushing after the game. “There is still work to do because I feel we could have executed a win. When you come here (Miami), you’re going to have to suffer with the plethora of stars that they have and the world-class players that they brought in. You know you’re going to give golden chances away and you have to execute.”

A set piece in the first half from Julian Gressel found the foot of Luis Suarez for the game’s opening goal. Along the way, forward Santiago Rodriguez missed high percentage chances that not only could have equalized the game, but also given the club the lead. Still, the team was able to find the equalizer through Alonso Martinez’s goal before the first half whistle. What followed in the second half was a defensive effort to keep the game tied more so than searching for a win.

The pressure continues to build for Cushing who is helming a team that is just one point from last place in the Eastern Conference. They also have proven to be unable to score thus far in 2024 despite key signings such as Julian Fernandez and Mousef Bakrar seeing the field in significant ways.

“Not many teams will come here and tie,” said Cushing. “We’ll take the point and we’ll continue to make sure that we turn this point into three.”
