New York City FC head coach Nick Cushing wasn’t downtrodden despite the end of the five-game winning streak this past Friday. Instead, he lauded Columbus and spoke brightly on how both teams showed just how much quality MLS teams can bring to the pitch.

“What you saw tonight was probably two of the best teams in MLS going at each other,” said Cushing following the loss. “If we are going to be the best league in the world, (that) was top level. It reminded me of two heavyweights going at each other. We were trying to tweak it and get the fix, then the red card is one of those moments that just flip the game on its head.”

Columbus game into Yankee Stadium and controlled most of the first half. City tried their best to catch the Crew off-guard but found their sturdy midfield too much to push through. Several chances were amiss or MVP caliber goalkeeper Matt Freese made impressive saves to keep the club’s head above water. Just before halftime, Mitja Ilenic drew a red card, forcing changes but City were able to score despite being down a man to give the club momentum.

From there Columbus took control, scoring three unanswered goals and solidifying the game. City still showed fight, drawing one back before the end and giving the Crew something to consider. While the streak came to an end, the performance proved that NYC isn’t going anywhere in 2024 and could be a dark horse contender in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The inclusion of Christian McFarlane, who made his debut, and Maxi Moralez shows that the club has the depth to compete with just about anyone in the Eastern conference.

“Christian’s got a big future,” said Cushing after the game. “One that I’m proud to play a part in at the moment by giving him his debut. It’s all about continuing to work now. He’s got to aim to start a game.”

That may happen this week as NYCFC take to the road for two games. The first involves a cross-country flight to Los Angeles to play the Galaxy on Wednesday. From there they will travel to Nashville to close out a busy week.
