New York City FC forward Malachi Jones has undergone surgery for an injury sustained during Friday’s 4-2 win over Orlando City at Yankee Stadium. The first half collision with the goalkeeper left the 20 year-old with a right broken tibia and fibula, requiring doctors to repair the damage.

“Malachi is a special player who has made big impact this season,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “We look forward to welcoming him back to the group after his rehab.”

Jones, an Sierra Leone orphan who was adopted by a family in the United States in 2013, was selected eighth in the first round of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft and quickly made his talents apparent to the coaching staff so much so that he pushed his way into the first team. With only one appearance with the reserve team in MLS Next Pro, he has already appeared 14 times for the first team and was quickly working his way into a repeat role for the club.

While his injury is unfortunate, he is expected to rehab and be a major part of the club’s future plans. He has already contributed a goal and an assist this season. NYCFC will be continuing their season this Wednesday against CF Montreal at Yankee Stadium.
