New York Red Bulls have made their first official move in the 2025 transfer window by bringing in Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren from Polish club Rakow Czestochowa. The 27 year-old comes in as a replacement for departed midfielder Felipe Carballo who’s negotiations were stalled and his loan ended after half of the 2025 season.

“He is someone who will bring quality, leadership and a winning mentality to our team,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider. “We are happy to have him join the club.”

Berggren spent three years with his previous Polish club, playing in over 100 games and tallying five goals with seven assists. Named team MVP in the 2024 season, Berggren helped the club lift their first league championship during the 2022-23 season. Previous to that, his career began with BK Hacken in Sweden. While there he made 126 appearances, scoring eight goals.

“Gustav possesses the abilities that we want in our central midfielders,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz. “He will be a great asset to our midfield and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to work with him.”

Red Bulls will continue the 2025 season for one more game against this weekend against Chicago Fire before kicking off the Leagues Cup against Chivas de Guadelajara next week.
