New York Red Bulls fill their vacant back-up goalkeeper position with LA Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy at the transfer deadline. In return, Red Bulls will send $150,000 in General Allocation Money as well as a third round MLS Super Draft pick to last year’s MLS Cup winners.
“He’s shown up in big moments throughout his whole career,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider. “John will help add MLS experience to our goalkeeper core and be a great example to our younger goalkeepers.”
John McCarthy is a Philadelphia native who has traversed the US Soccer landscape. He started in MLS with the Philadelphia Union in 2015 before joining Inter Miami in their inaugural year in 2020. From there he made is way to LAFC before lifting the MLS Cup with the LA Galaxy last season, against the same team he is joining now.
McCarthy’s addition comes as AJ Marcucci suffered a season-ending injury, leaving the club without a first team back-up goalkeeper. Carlos Coronel is still expected to be the started, but with international breaks in the coming months, McCarthy’s experience could prove to be essential as the club pushes for yet another playoff appearance.
This signing more than likely concludes the transfer window for New York Red Bulls which includes the signings of Andy Rojas and Rafael Mosquera. Red Bulls will now head into Charlotte tomorrow in an effort to solidify their playoff position with just seven game to go in the 2025 MLS regular season.
