New York City FC needed some help on the defense and have signed Brazilian Raul Gustavo from the Hungarian first division. Gustavo is 26 years old and has experience with head coach Pascal Jansen who coached him in 2024.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me,” said Gustavo about his signing. “I’m grateful to be part of a club with a vast ambition. I’ve followed the growth of MLS and New York City’s journey, and I’m motivated to contribute to the team’s success.”
Gustavo is a product of the vaunted Corinthians academy in Brazil where he started his career in 2020. His career has taken him through Europe with Croatian side Locomotiva, Bahia in Brazil and finally in Hungary where he has spent the last two seasons.
His inclusion is a welcome sign as the NYCFC defense has been ravaged with injuries. Team captain Thiago Martins underwent knee surgery in late July, sidelining the reliable defender for four to six weeks. Gustavo’s addition means that head coach Pascal Jansen can lessen the workload on players like Justin Haak, Mitja Ilenic and Tayvon Gray.
“His previous work with Pacal at Ferencvaros, which we believe will help Raul adapt once he joins us in New York City,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “Raul has proven himself in high-pressure environments and has the characteristics we believe will make him a good fit for our system.”
New York City returns to MLS play this weekend against Nashville SC at Yankee Stadium.
