New York Red Bulls head coach indicated that back-up goalkeeper John McCarthy will make his first start for the club in the last game of the 2025 MLS season against Columbus Crew. McCarthy, who was acquired late in the transfer window from LA Galaxy, has yet to appear for the club in any capacity but has been linked with potentially becoming the new starter in 2026 as Carlos Coronel has signaled his exit from the club.
“What I can say in these two years with Carlos (Coronel) is each day he is very professional,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz. “When I look back to the playoffs last year it was amazing what he has done for the team.”
Coronel joined Red Bulls in 2021 on loan from Red Bull Salzburg. The Paraguayan keeper tried his talents in Austria but spent most of his time in MLS with Philadelphia Union before joining Red Bulls. He quickly became the team starter and led the club to their first MLS Cup since 2009 with key saves. This season, his time was split between his club and country as Paraguay qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Great character and he has been so long in this organization,” said Schwarz. “Not only here now for us, also in his former club, Red Bull Salzburg. What I can say is that he is very professional, each day and very clear in our conversations, in our relationship.”
Coronel served as team captain for the first time in league play two weeks ago, an indicator that we may have seen his last game with the club. McCarthy stepping in for the final game of the season is yet another sign as Schwarz and the front office have decisions to make on the roster and in such an important spot as the goalkeeping position.
