New York City FC were underdogs on Sunday but took their “fight” mentality from the first whistle to the last in order to upset the reigning Supporters Shield winners Philadelphia Union. A stout defensive performance from the likes of Gustavo Raul and Justin Haak, along with a timely goal from Maxi Moralez was all that the club needed to continue their playoff push.

“The game plan from the first whistle was to fight,” said Haak after the game. “We were ready to do that as soon as the game kicked off. Going into halftime with the lead, we knew they would press us. They’re a very aggressive team, but we handled it well and slowed the game down when we needed to.”

One of the stars of the game was goalkeeper Matt Freese who made key saves in the second half. The Union’s pressure finally bent NYC’s defense but it was the last line held by the USMNT’s top goalkeeper that pushed City over the line. His play has grown to be one of the more important parts of what makes NYCFC what they are in 2025.

“I would say he saved us in the second half,” said Haak. “It really (goes to show) how he’s been playing for us for the past two years and with the US Men’s National Team. He’s finally getting recognition across the league. As a group we’re super happy for him and super happy he’s on our team.”

Another player the team is grateful for is 38 year-old veteran Moralez. The longest tenured player in club history added to his historic tally with the game’s only goal. His run into the box for the winner showcased how much age is just a number and the importance of his soccer I.Q. to the club.

“His leadership was there from day one,” said head coach Pascal Jansen. “He’s been a great inspiration for the whole dressing room since day one because he came back from a severe injury last season. If you see how much commitment he’s shown throughout the season to be available and to bring the level to the game that he’s done, this doesn’t surprise me.”

While last night was a celebration of what City have put together in 2025, the mission isn’t complete. Next will one of the toughest journeys the club has made as they will go head-to-head with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. The Saturday evening meeting will surely have eyes from across the American soccer landscape as NYC look to continue to play spoiler in this year’s playoffs.
