New York City FC received unfortunate news during the international break as their star striker Alonso Martinez suffered a major knee injury that will take eight-to-nine months to fully heal. City informed the media today that the Costa Rican player returned to the club after the injury to be further evaluated, with many expecting surgery to correct the issue.

Martinez was a major contributor for NYC this season, scoring 19 goals in 33 regular season game. His form carried into the playoffs where he provided an impressive effort for the club’s win in their opening match against Charlotte FC. Martinez scored again in the third game, helping the club eliminate Charlotte and head to the Eastern Conference semi final.

The club is slated to play Supporters Shield winners Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park on Sunday November, 23rd. Head coach Pascal Jansen will need to deal with not just the loss of Martinez, but also Andres Perea who suffered a season-ending injury during their last game as well.
