Red Bull New York will keep goalkeeper AJ Marcucci for four more years through 2030 according to team sources. The 26 year-old Pennsylvania-native has been a staple of Red Bull II but has quickly inched his way into the conversation of starting keeper following the departure of Carlos Coronel.
Marcucci made his debut with Red Bull II in 2021, playing in 19 games in the USL Championship. Selected in the MLS SuperDraft, Marcucci is yet another member of a long line of local northeast players that has found his way into the first team with Red Bull. Previous goalkeepers like Ryan Meara and the great Tim Howard have been local products who have not only found domestic success but a rabid following from the loyal New York/New Jersey fanbase.
The young American finally made a move to Europe in 2024, on loan with IF Ginstan in Finland. While there he made 14 appearances before returning to the club to pick up the mantle of back-up keeper for the first team.
Whether or not he takes over the mantle of first-team starter remains to be seen. Veteran John McCarthy was brought near the end of the MLS regular season to step in for Coronel who had international duties with Panama. Marcucci has impressed coaches in training, leading to his re-signing with sure expectations of a chance at the starting position.
New York is currently overhauling their roster with new Head of Sport Jochen Schneider and head coach Michael Bradley. We’ve already seen the departure of Coronel, Lewis Morgan and Peter Stroud. Cade Cowell has joined the club along with defender Justin Che. The re-signing of Marcucci indicates the clubs internal needs but also their willingness to give chances, which has been the club’s cornerstone philosophy since their start in 1996.
