New York City FC have a striker problem heading into 2026 as their key talisman Alonso Martinez finds himself on the injured list for a large chunk of next season. The two playoff games where City had to make due saw a range of options from Nico Fernandez to Agustin Ojeda occupying that role. However, there is an option that is returning to the club, following the end of his loan in Brazil: Talles Magno.
Magno, now 23 years-old, played 50 games on loan with Corinthians for the past two years and scored just five goals over that span. The forward is usually more of a winger, however NYC have found success converting wingers into strikers as they did with Martinez. Magno’s departure from the club was mired in rumors that he didn’t get along with the Nick Cushing coaching staff. Now that the team has turned over in large part both on the bench and in the front office, the door could be open to a return.
The young Brazilian was brought to NYCFC in 2021, a transfer from Vasco de Gama in Rio de Janeiro. While his goal numbers never reached the expected heights, he played in double digit games each year thru 2023. A knee injury saw his playing time significantly reduced and he was unable to break back into the squad following the departure of head coach Ronny Deila.
All of this will depend on whether fences were mended between the club and the player. Having been sent out on loan for the last two seasons, City were more than likely hoping that Magno would have his purchase option picked up by Corinthians. When they didn’t happen, the club noted that he would be returning this off-season. A player with his talent could still be very useful to City as they enter a pivotal period.
Much of NYCFC in 2026 will remain intact under head coach Pascal Jansen. The striker position is one need for the club as new Sporing Director Todd Dunivant steps in to fill the gaps. The club also has to decide on their relationship with legendary player Maxi Moralez. Should he retire, a new need will open up on the roster.
