New York City FC announced that defender Mitja Ilenic is negotiating an exit from the club. This news comes after the team announced their intention to leave him off the preseason roster as they travel to Florida.
Ilenic joined the club in 2023 under head coach Nick Cushing. The Slovenian defender made 20-plus appearances in 2023 and 2024, contributing to the club’s turnover from Ronny Deila in 2022. Over that time the player found himself in competition for the spots with the likes of Kevin O’Toole and Tayvon Gray.
Under head coach Pascal Jansen in 2025, it appeared that his minutes grew less and less. Injuries as well played a factor as he only played in 19 games, scoring two goals along the way.
Where Ilenic ends up remains to be seen. The player did show his versatility through difficult injury stretches to the City defense. His ability to get forward in play also showed how he added to the attack under pervious coaches.
