New York City FC announce the signing of NYCFC II goalkeeper Mac Learned to a first team contract ahead of the 2026 season. The California-native made 14 starts in the 2025 season, helping the club establish themselves in the newly minted third division.
“It was about grinding and proving myself in a professional environment,” said Learned after signing with the first team. “Competing in MLS Next Pro with New York City FC II helped me prepare for this opportunity, and I’m incredibly grateful for the role everyone played in helping me reach this point in my career.”
Learned has all of the physical tools to be a reliable player in MLS. His 6’4, 190 pound frame, makes him an imposing target in goal. And, learning under one of the better goalkeepers in MLS, Matt Freese will serve as a strong mentor. More than likely, Learned will also see time in goal considering the possibility of Freese’s time increasing with the US Men’s National team.
What Learned represents is even more important to the club’s growth heading into their second decade of existence. Growth through the developmental team is what has come to define several clubs and this goalkeeper signing represents the sixth player to come through the fledgeling reserve team.
“Under the direction of assistant coach Rob Vartughian, the club has fostered a healthy and competitive environment for our goalkeepers,” said new Sporting Director Todd Dunivant. “We’re excited for Mac to join Matt Freese, Tomas Romero and Greg Ranjitsingh as we continue to strengthen the goalkeeper position.”
