Red Bull New York has announced the signing of US international goalkeeper Ethan Horvath from Cardiff City in Wales. The deal sees the player with the club for one-and-a-half years through the 2027 season with options after the truncated 2027 season and 2028 campaign.

“He has competed at the highest levels,” said Head of Sport Julian de Guzman. “His leadership will be invaluable for our locker room and our goakeeping unit as a whole.”

Horvath is one of the more high profile signings the club has made in recent years, which has seen their transfer policy shift somewhat from strictly young or developing players to veterans who can help the club win in the present. Horvath, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg are representations of the new direction the club has taken with regards to transfer policy in recent years.

The 30 year-old keeper has significant European experience having joined Molde in Norway professionally in 2013. From there he made moves to Belgium with Club Brugge before landing with legendary English Club Nottingham Forrest in 2021. Along the way he has been a key piece of the USMNT pipeline, playing for the U20 and U23 team before making appearances with the primary national team.

His most recent stint with Cardiff City in the Championship saw him make more than 30 appearances while also going out on loan with Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday. Now, the Colorado native makes the move to MLS with one of the larger markets in Red Bull with the hopes of expanding his resume.

“He has shown throughout his career that he can perform in big moments,” said head coach Michael Bradley. “He is a strong shot-stopper, commands his area well, and fits the way we play.”

Red Bull is finishing preseason preparations and will begin the MLS regular season on February 21st in Orlando.
