New York Red Bulls have officially placed captain and designated player Emil Forsberg on the injured list, meaning he will miss a minimum of six games across MLS and Leagues Cup competition. This will mean that the Swedish midfielder will not be able to rejoin the team until late August at a minimum, putting the Red Bulls season in serious doubt.

Forsberg, who joined from RB Leipzig before the start of the 2024 season, was hand-picked to be team captain by new head coach Sandro Schwarz. While he no longer plays in Germany, his playing days in Sweden were not over as he made several appearances, all of which resulting in time lost with the MLS franchise. This past trip was most troublesome as the club was missing key players such as Carlos Coronel and Lewis Morgan to name a few.

While it remains unclear, Forsberg returned with a foot injury that kept him to limited time in recent games. Now, after further evaluation, the team has placed him on the injured list but have yet to disclose whether the injury was sustained on international duty or if it was one that has lingered through the campaign.

Forsberg has made 15 appearances for Red Bulls this year, scoring six goals and notching three assists. His loss rewinds the team back one year where they had no playmaker in the midfield and begs questions of the sporting team as to whether they can fill the gaps left by not just this injury but also the departure of Frankie Amaya.
