HARRISON, N.J. – New York Red Bulls II return to Sports Illustrated on the weekend of their 10th anniversary and win with a late penalty over rivals New York City FC II on Sunday afternoon. The back-and-forth contest saw the youngest and brightest of both teams in what could be the future of the rivalry in coming years.

City found themselves on the back foot early as Wiktor Bogacz, in a rehab appearance from the first team, tortured the defense. His movement and physicality saw NYC’s defense flip inside out as they tried their best to contain his offense. He found the back of the net in the seventh minute after a shot from Julian Hall escaped the City keeper and fell to the Polish striker’s foot. From there City grew into the game as they attempted to play over the midfield. That planned worked as the team found the equalizer off of Julien Lacher just five minutes later.

Red Bulls worked hard in possession for most of the remainder of the half with City looking uneven in their attempts at wrangling control. The second half saw a different story as NYC were able to pressure the Red Bulls defense and find the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute. Collin McCamy took a shot from the top of the box, beating New York keeper Aiden Stokes. Head coach Ibrahim Sekagya was not to be undone as his substitutions brought them back into the game.

Rafael Mosquera equalized the game just 10 minutes after City took the lead with an assist from Hall. Red Bulls continued to push, forcing City into dangerous tackles, eventually seeing Piero Elias leave the game following a second yellow card. New York continued to push, finding the game winner after a penalty was awarded in the 86th minute.

The win is the second of the season for Red Bulls II and the first loss for NYCFC II in 2025. The game marked the team’s home opener and a win on their anniversary weekend.
