Red Bull New York will play one of the most decorated clubs in World football on November 14th as Mexican giants Club America travel to Sports Illustrated Stadium for a friendly. The two clubs haven’t met since 2016, when America traveled to then Red Bull Arena, and lost 2-0.

The game comes just days before the start of the MLS Cup Playoffs, which Red Bull are currently holding a qualifying position. It is tenuous though, as the club has just 33 points, tied with NYCFC and could potentially fall out of contention if they lose to San Diego FC this weekend.

Club America are currently in second place in the Apertura, tied on points with Toluca. Historically, America have been one of the most dominant clubs in the region, winning 16 Liga MX titles, six Copa MX and seven Concacaf Champions Leagues. On the other, Red Bull New York are a founding member of MLS but have yet to raise major silverware, other than the 2013, 2015 and 2018 Supporters Shield for best regular season record.

Should Red Bull qualify for the playoffs, expectations are that a mostly reserve side will take the field. If they are eliminated, it may be the final game for several key players including Emil Forsberg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
