Gotham FC have been busy in the transfer window, adding forward Jessica Silva from Benfica through the remainder of the season on a free transfer. Silva, 29 years-old, has significant experience across Europe and even with the NWSL in 2021-22 where she played for the Kansas City Current.
“Jessica is a quality player,” said General Manager Yael Averbach West. “(She) will contribute to our already high-level environment and through the rest of the season.”
Silva scored 37 goals in 74 appearances for Benfica while helping the club lift three consecutive league titles and women’s Portuguese Super Cup. Her time with KC didn’t deliver any significant numbers in just 14 games with no goals. However, Silva brings experience from many leagues that will mix very well with the already experienced group in Gotham.
“I am so excited to return to the NWSL and play for a top club in Gotham FC,” said Silva. “I can’t wait to be a part of the club’s journey for the rest of the season.”
News of the move comes days after Gotham received an international spot for this and next season as part of a trade with the Utah Royals. The club sent $100,000 in allocation money to the West Coast club and quickly used the spot to bring in Silva.
Gotham returns to the field on Monday when they play Chelsea FC in a friendly between two of the biggest clubs in women’s club football.
