New York Red Bulls II forward Mohammed Sofo has signed his first MLS contract, keeping the player with the first team officially through the end of the 2026 season with an option for 2027 and 2028. The news comes just days after Serge Ngoma signed his extension, giving New York youth in the attack for years to come.
Sofo, a native of Accra, Ghana, went through the JMG Academy in Africa before coming the New York in 2023. The 19 year-old played 26 games for the MLS Next Pro side New York Red Bulls II, scoring six goals across that time. He also made one appearance for the first team in MLS this year.
“Mohammed has been in training with us the whole season and I’m looking forward to continue to work with him,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz. “He possesses qualities that we look for in our players and we are happy to have him with us.”
The signing is continued proof the professional pipeline that Red Bulls have created between their reserve team and the MLS squad. Saturday’s game against Sporting KC may feature a larger number of those players than we’ve seen in the past. Sofo represents the newest generation of that pipeline and one that the club has worked at for nine years to cultivate.
Currently, New York Red Bulls II are just outside of the playoffs in MLS Next Pro, just three points shy of eighth place. While it hasn’t been the easiest of campaigns, the team has been able to provide players like Sofo, Omar Valencia and Rafael Mosquera, just to name a few, with opportunities to show their skills on a larger stage. Many have also gone on to represent their national team during windows like the one the first team will be playing through this weekend.
“He worked extremely hard for this opportunity,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider. “Mohammed has progressed very well with New York Red Bulls II over the last year.”
