New York City FC have traded goalkeeper Luis Barazza to DC United in exchange for $150 thousand dollars in General Allocation Money. The move comes after a season where Barraza saw little time other than one appearance replacing an injured Matt Freese. While Barraza had the backing of head coach Nick Cushing, it was more than obvious that he would not be the first choice goalkeeper in the near future.

“I fondly remember winning MLS Cup and Campeones Cup and helped bring joy to our passionate fans,” said Barraza about his departure. “I look forward to the next challenge in my career and wish my club and teammates all the best in the upcoming season.”

Barraza joins a DC United team in need of a goalkeeper. Whether or not he becomes the starter remains to be seen. While in NYC he was given the 2023 season to prove his worth and made 24 league appearances. Over that time he allowed 31 goals with a 66% save percentage. Barraza had been with the club since 2019 but will now be moving on within the Conference.

This means that NYCFC will be looking for a backup goalkeeper. NYCFC II goalkeeper Kofi Hope-Gund could step into those shoes or the team could look elsewhere in the market as free agents will be looking for minutes ahead of a fixture congested 2025.
