New York Red Bulls midfielder Felipe Carballo has departed the club following the end of his loan spell which began one year ago. The Uruguayan made his mark with the club, scoring the game-winning effort against NYCFC in the 2024 Eastern Conference semi-final.

“Felipe was a hard-working player and helped the club create many memories, especially in last year’s playoff run, that will always be remembered,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider.

Carballo was brought in following the abrupt departure of Frankie Amaya midseason, forcing the club to look for options. Ronald Donkor served as a dependable stopgap but more experience was needed in the position. The veteran joined the club in August of 2024, playing his first game in September and becoming an important part of Red Bulls’ run to MLS Cup.

In total Carballo played in 24 games, scoring all of his goals in the playoffs. This season he made 10 starts with six others coming off the bench and notching his only two MLS assists. He now returns to his Brazilian club in Gremio where expectations are that he will move on to a different club shortly after.

The move opens up a designated player spot, where rumors are abound that German striker Timo Werner will join in the near future. Either way, there is now room for New York to maneuver signings as the team makes a midseason playoff push up the Eastern Conference table.
