There is little doubt that the near two seasons with Hannes Wolf in NYCFC has been not just a success but the type of player that the club has been looking to carry them forward for some time. Last night’s game against Toronto showed the best case example of why the team’s success will lie on whether or not the Austrian international is involved in the attack.
“Hannes (Wolf) is the ultimate team player,” said head coach Pascal Jansen. “His work rate is incredible. Especially with our situation playing with Birk (Risa) as left full back out of possession. His job is double. He has to support that way and still be productive.”
And productive he was as he scored the game’s opening goal to set the pace and assisted on the brace that carried City to a much-needed win at Yankee Stadium. Overall Wolf has netted nine goals and four assists in 2025, making him one of the most productive players on the team. Last season he showed more of his abilities as an assist many by notching eight and scoring five goals in the regular season.
His combination play with Alonso Martinez has also proved to be important to the team’s offense. While the star Costa Rican striker may not have showed up on the scoreboard, Wolf’s play opens up runs that keep the opposing defenses in check.
“He understands the league more than he did before,” said Jansen. “The outcome is there and that’s something we work a lot on in training: How you finish, how you get yourself in position and it’s working out for him at the moment.”
City’s win was a major boost to their playoff push and the continued output of Wolf will be important towards the final verdict come the end of the season. Next up will be a road trip against Charlotte FC to test the team’s strength as they look to improve their road form.
