New York City FC head coach Pascal Jansen spoke glowingly of new designated player Benie Traore as what the club has needed through the first half of the season. The attacking player brings a new and dynamic look to the attack as they look to push back into a prominent playoff position. All went well in their first game back as they defeated Columbus Crew SC on Wednesday night, 2-1 at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field.
“Benie was the profile that we had been looking for quite a bit,” said Jansen on what he’s seen from the Ivorian forward. “This was a perfect opportunity for him to play, introduce himself to MLS and feel what it is to play like in this league. He did well and did the things that we expected from him, which fits his profile and what the team needs him to do.”
Traore started the game next to two other dynamic City forwards, Agustin Ojeda and Malachi Jones. That combination is not just one of youth but also of strong, intelligent offensive play that has been an issue for NYC after the loss of key players like Maxi Moralez earlier in the year. He played 55 minutes before coming off for Hannes Wolf but made his mark by drawing the defenders into compromising positions and creating free kick opportunities.
Load management will be key as this is Traore’s first brush with the condensed MLS schedule. At the same time, it will also be his introduction to the City fandom as the club plays their first game at home since the World Cup break.
