New York Red Bulls have announced the signing of Uruguayan international Felipe Carballo on loan for a year from Brazilian club Gremio. Carballo will be the team’s third designated player with the club having an option to buy the player outright at the end of the loan.

Carballo adds much-needed midfield experience, following the departure of Frankie Amaya earlier in the campaign. The 27 year-old has played 31 games for Gremio and has significant experience across South America. A majority of his time comes with the Uruguayan club Nacional over 100 games for the club between 2015 and 2022. His most recent stint with Gremio saw him play 39 games in his first season and just 15 this current season.

“Felipe has a proven track record of success,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider. “We are looking forward to getting him on the pitch at Red Bull Arena and helping us continue our push to the postseason.”

Carballo also has experience with the Uruguayan national team, making seven appearances in 2023. The experience helps balance the mostly young midfield currently consisting of Daniel Edelman, Ronald Donkor and a returning Peter Stroud. The team also fills in their last designated player position, joining Emil Forsberg and Dante Vanzeir.

“He is a skillful midfielder,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz. “He will help anchor our midfield and we are happy to have him at the club.”

When he can begin playing for Red Bull remains to be seen as the team is still waiting on his P1 visa. While next week’s game against Charlotte may seem unlikely, expect Carballo to be on the field in early September as the team pushes towards the end of the 2024 campaign.
