New York Red Bulls have officially announced the signing of Cameroonian forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on a two-year deal with an option for a third. The former Bayern Munich player has significant experience in big-game situations and hopes to bring that knowledge to the club in 2025.

“Maxim is a strong forward that will bring a lot of experience and leadership to our club,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz. “He will be a great addition to our roster and we are looking forward to seeing him on the pitch at Sports Illustrated Stadium.”

Choupo-Moting most recently spent the last four seasons with Bayern Munich where he scored 19 goals in 88 appearances. While always playing a back-up role to the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane, the 35 year-old maximized his opportunities and was always a potential threat across the reigns of several high-profile managers.

Previous to Munich, Choupo-Moting spent time with Paris St. Germain, Hamburger SV, Mainz, Schalke and even Stoke City. He has played in the UEFA Champions League and represented his home country of Cameroon, finishing third in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The bigger question that comes with this signing is where the space on the roster will be made. Choupo-Moting will take a designated player spot, currently making him the fourth player to have that tag. Emil Forsberg, Felipe Carballo and Dante Vanzeir will either have to be brought down using allocation money or one of them will depart the club for the team to reach roster compliance.
