New York City FC midfielder James Sands will return to Europe on loan with St. Pauli in the Bundesliga for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The American player, who previously played for Rangers FC in Scotland, has been an important part of City’s midfield and will be difficult to replace for the team’s new head coach when it is announced.
“When James returned from his loan in 2023, he was always clear that in the future he wanted the opportunity to return to Europe,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “We agreed that we would be supportive of those ambitions at the right time. This is an incredible opportunity for James to play in one of the top five European leagues.”
Sands, who was NYC’s first homegrown player, has made over 100 appearances with the club dating back to 2017. His spell with the club was marked by loans in Scotland with the previously mentioned Rangers but really shined with the MLS club after his return in 2023. Over that time he has made 20 plus appearances and was pivotal part of previous head coach Nick Cushing’s plans.
Where this leaves City remains to be seen. While Andres Perea did start with the club as a midfielder, he has seen himself in a more advanced role. Keaton Parks has also been more effective moving forward than sitting in front of the defenders. The situation could open up possibilities for Justin Haak to become a starter but much will rely on who the head coach will be in the 2025 season.
“I feel like it’s the right time to make a move back to Europe,” said Sands. “I wish my teammates and the club all the best of luck in the upcoming season.”
