New York City FC will have a new boss behind the bench in 2025 as the team has named former AZ Alkmaar manager Pascal Jansen as their sixth head coach. There are still visa hurdles to clear before Jansen joins the team but he is expected to be with the club by the time they make the trip to Palm Springs for the Coachella Valley Invitational next month.
“Pascal brings fantastic experience and a style of play that aligns with our philosophy,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “(He) wants to play an entertaining and attacking style that will create chances and score goals, which I’m sure our fans will enjoy watching and help us compete for trophies across all competitions in 2025 and beyond.”
Jansen was most recently managing in Hungary where his stay only lasted six months. His time there saw the side Ferencvarosi TC in second place before departing for Major League Soccer. Before that he was with AZ Alkmaar in the Erdivisie where he finished with a record of 94-26-42.
NYCFC will enter the 2025 season with more questions than answers. While their coach does have first division experience in Europe, it is not with the kinds of teams we’ve seen previous coaching helm in the past. Ronny Deila represented a similar departure and found tremendous success so the muted nature of Jansen’s resume shouldn’t be one to deter fans from optimism.
“This is a special club,” said Jansen about his assignment. “I believe in a holistic approach where we want to make sure the players in our environment live up to their full potential and become the best versions of themselves.”
