Gotham FC have finally found the right gear as their 4-0 win over Angel City on Friday marked their second consecutive win and second consecutive multi-goal performance. Esther Gonzalez showed how special she is as a forward, scoring two goals again and taking her tally for the season up to four.
“We dominated the game,” said head coach Juan Carlos Amoros after the game in LA. “We were able to create high quality chances to score (against) them and set pieces as well. I am super proud of the team. How they stick to the game plan while they express themselves.”
Gotham started the season in a bit of a slump as they drew two and lost one in their first three fixtures. The last two, a 3-1 win over North Carolina and a 4-0 win over Angel City, have set them on a path that head coach Amoros knows they can thrive.
The team has also been bolstered by the return of Midge Purce. The 29 year-old forward missed much of last season with a knee injury. That, coupled with the team’s other lagging issues, saw them enter the playoffs on a slump from which they never recovered. However, Purce’s return, playing 20 minutes on Friday night, coupled with her ability in front of goal, should give Gotham the boost they so richly desire.
“I think to get outcomes you want, you need to try and control the process,” said Amoros in the lead up to the Angel City game. “That’s what we focus a lot on in our day-to-day.”
Gotham is hoping to take that focus into Providence Park on Tuesday night as the team looks to make it three in-a-row. The Thorns are currently in ninth place with just one win in 2025. Most recently they lost an emotional derby to Seattle Reign and are hoping to course correct as well against a visiting Gotham club.
