RB Leipzig moved quickly to fill in their vacant head coaching vacancy by hiring former Mallorca skipper Martin Demichelis. The 45 year-old Argentinian coach joins the club as they are preparing for a return to the UEFA Champions League with high expectations from the new sporting management.

“Martin combine a clear footballing philosophy with intensity and outstanding expertise,” said Managing Director of Sport Marcel Schafer. “We are convinced that he will bring fresh impetus to the team and play a key role in the club’s continued success and development.”

Demichelis joins the club following years of experience across three continents. After spending time as an assistant coach with the La Liga side Malaga, he helmed the vaunted Mexican club CF Monterrey to a Liga MX final. From there he joined Mallorca where he scored a massive win over over Real Madrid last season.

Leipzig are a club that has been in transition over recent years. While Ole Werner joined to stabilize the club, he was seen as not sufficient to continue the work following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull. Demichelis is now seen as the right mind to make the move in creating a dynamic style of play to potentially cross the line in a Bundesliga that has been dominated by Bayern Munich for nearly two decades.

“RB Leipzig are an ambitious club with a clear identity,” I’m really looking forward to leading RB Leipzig in the Champions League. Testing ourselves against Europe’s best is an incredible challenge and exactly where a club with RB Leipzig’s ambition and quality belongs.”
