New York City FC have gained an important midfielder in James Sands who returns to the club following his loan with St. Pauli ended following the 2025-26 Bundesliga season. The Rye, New York native has been a member of the Pigeons since 2017, building himself through the youth ranks and making himself an important part of the club over the years. Now, he is returning after two years away at a time where the club is in need of his experience, following the major injury to Maxi Moralez.
“New York City has been with me every step of the way,” said Sands upon his return. “Now it’s my turn to give the best years of my career back to the club.”
City are in an interesting position in 2026. The fixture congestion left them in eighth place in the Eastern Conference heading into the World Cup break. A heartbreaking run in the US Open Cup only added to the team’s fixture woes as they search for answers in both the striker and attacking midfielder positions. While Sands isn’t an attacking option like Moralez, he provides a defensive stability that can let the likes of Andres Perea play free-flowing style to support Nico Fernandez, Hannes Wolf and Agustin Ojeda in the attack.
The schedule won’t be kind to City as the club enters the Leagues Cup in early August. Another opportunity for Pascal Jansen and his team to prove their abilities but will continue to put pressure on the results in MLS as they hope to return and surpass their 2025 playoff push.
“James has been an important part of this club’s history,” said Sporting Director Todd Dunivant. “(He) has proven himself in this league and now brings top European experience. As we continue to build our core roster, James will be a vital member of our group moving forward.”
